PURPOSE
The purpose of this assignment is to introduce you to the dynamic and varied field of HR
through a review of current library and electronic resources. The assignment is designed
to increase your learning about HR Management by examining current and topical issues
relating to the field. The assignment will also provide an exposure to the many
information resources available to today’s HR professional.
GUIDELINES
Assignment hint :do not just use Google, go to the library and learn how to use the
databases for research purposes.
Locate 2 current articles about workplace Health and Safety.
These should be published works in a professional journal (at least 3 pages in length, 250
to 500 words min.). The articles should be as current as possible (i.e. published in the
last 3years).
You should use different sources of information to conduct your research. Choose at least
one article from a subscription database such as:
• EbscoHost database (e.g. Academic Source Premier, Business Source Complete,
Canadian Reference Centre)
• Proquest databases (e.g. CBCA Business, CBCA Reference)
• LexisNexis database
• Or Professional Journals
• Canadian Occupational Health and Safety http://www.cos-mag.com/
• OHS Canada http://www.ohscanada.com/
The articles must be of substantial content; more than just a newspaper article.

Each of the articles needs to address a different functional area of H&S, examples to
choose from:
• Risk Management Leadership and Systems
• Violence in the workplace
• H&S Leadership
• Auditing and/ or Quality Control
• Hazardous Analysis and control
• OH&S Ethics
• Chemical exposure
• Compliance with PPE’s
• Industry safety
• Young worker awareness
• Issues with WISB
• Trends at the Ministry of Labour
Review the articles, highlight the articles and prepare a brief summary of each article
(max one page each). The summary needs to be submitted in a word-processed
document with the title, author and source of the article identified in sub-titles.
In your own words, provide a summary of the major points that are made in the article. If
using definitions or terms from the article, be sure to reference the authors of the article
directly (as opposed to appearing to have written these yourself).
Summarize your learning about the H&S field at the end of the 2articles by providing a 1
page reflection paper
What do you know now that you didn’t know prior to conducting the literature
search? What observations do you have now about the H&S profession? What
further learning do you want to explore? (at least 1pages in length)

YOUR SUBMISSION
The following will be required with your submission:
1. Cover page with the title of the assignment, your name(s) and student number(s),
course name, date and professor’s name;
2. Table of contents;
3. Summary of articles with highlights;
4. Learning summary/reflection;What do you know now that you didn’t know prior
to conducting the literature search? What observations do you have now about
the H&S profession? What further learning do you want to explore?
5. Copies of the original articles with key points highlighted;
6. Reference page with all articles listed using APA format;
7. All of this information should be clipped, stapled or bound together in some way.
