Instructions to Student

Students are to hand in professionally presented portfolios to their teacher for assessment, alternatively if you have produced electronic portfolios they may be uploaded via Connect.

Students are to present the portfolio of evidence with the following sections:

Section 1 – Six (6) Learning Experiences based on the observations recorded in assessment task 3 (using the learning experience plan template).

Section 2 – Eight (8) Journal Entries (Self-Reflections).

Assessment Criteria:

To achieve a satisfactory result, your assessor will be looking for your ability to demonstrate the following key skills to an acceptable industry standard:

Demonstrated ability to plan and implement child-focused learning experiences based on the observations gathered in Assessment Task three (3)

Demonstrated ability to critically reflect on learning experiences & pedagogy

Good level of literacy: correct grammar, spelling & punctuation

Number of Attempts:

You will receive up to two (2) attempts at this assessment task. Should your 1st attempt be unsatisfactory (U), your teacher will provide feedback and discuss the relevant sections / questions with you and will arrange a due date for the submission of your 2nd attempt. If your 2nd submission is unsatisfactory (U), or you fail to submit a 2nd attempt, you will receive an overall unsatisfactory result for this assessment task. Only one re-assessment attempt may be granted for each assessment task. For more information, refer to the Student Rules.

Instructions to Assessor

Assessment must be demonstrated in a regulated education and care service.

Note to Student

An overview of all Assessment Tasks relevant to this unit is located in the Unit Study Guide.

Section 1 – Six (6) Learning Experiences

This section of this assessment is based on the previous assessment, so students will need to refer to their documentation in Assessment 3.

The follow-up experiences identified at the end of the observations in Assessment 3 are to be used to plan and implement six (6) learning experiences while on vocational placement. Two (2) learning experience plans per focus child are expected (total of six (6) plans).

As much as possible, work holistically when planning experiences, so that each experience promotes numerous domains of development.

For this assessment, you must make sure that in the totality of the six (6) plans, the following evidence is included/provided:

One (1) opportunity must be given for the child/ren – to be creative and express themselves (their thoughts, knowledge and ideas)

One (1) opportunity must be given for the child/ren – to be imaginative and dramatic (self-expression)

One (1) opportunity must be given to promote/encourage children’s self-help/independence skills

Three (3) opportunities must be given to promote children’s social and emotional skills (self-concept, self-esteem, feelings, emotional and psychological)

It is up to the student to decide how the above can be combined within the plans. If students feel that they may need to plan and implement extra experiences (in order to cover all of the above criteria), then they may do so. These additional plans will also need to be handed in.

A learning experience plan template has been provided in this assessment

Students will be required to share their plans with the lead educator before implementing them in the room.

It is also encouraged that students display their plans in the room in which they are implementing their experiences, so that they are accessible to parents and families for feedback and suggestions.

Section 2 – Journal Entries (Self-Reflections)

Keep a reflective journal while on vocational placement. A minimum of eight (8) reflections (entries) are expected. The intention is for you to gather insights that support and enrich your decision-making about what happens and why, and to reflect on what you might need to change or improve.

For this reason, each entry is not just a description of an event/experience. It may describe what was felt by the student and why; theoretical perspectives might be referred to; pedagogical practices can be critiqued as examples.

Using core professional documents – such as the ECA Code of Ethics and EYLF (principles and practices – pages 11-18) is expected, as they not only inform your professional practice, but also help you to reflect on what you have done well on Vocational Placement and what you still need to improve on.

Each entry will be dated. Each entry will also need to be cross-referenced to at least one of the above mentioned documents, as evidence they can match their pedagogy (practice) with professional documents (best practice)
