Aim(s)

This module is designed to enable the student to develop a critical appreciation of a range of business process and data analysis approaches and to explore key contemporary issues regarding their application in organisations.

Learning outcomes covered

Critically evaluate, and reflexively apply, methods, techniques and tools for assessing, controlling and improving organisational processes and data;

Critically demonstrate an appreciation of issues relating to the analysis of business processes and data in Organisations;

Synthesise information and create appropriate visual representations of their analysis via use of an appropriate tool.

Assignment Brief

Task 01: Process reengineering in the wake of an economic crisis in Sri Lanka: Fuel Pass for fuel rationing (as implemented in August 2022)

During August 2022 GOSL (Ministry of power and energy) with the collaboration of Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) rolled out a “fuel pass system” to streamline the fuel purchases under the (then) prevalent fuel rationing scheme. The initial response was positive though the process was still evolving and getting finetuned amidst some hiccups.

Note– At the time of rolling out of this fuel pass system, fuel rationing was expected to last for the next 12 months as observed by the relevant minister in charge. You are required to address Task 01 in the context of this (as prevailed in August 2022 and further) fuel rationing scheme.

1.a) With the aid of a High level Use case diagram capture the main use cases of the ‘fuel pass system (06 marks)

1.b) In relation to this “fuel pass system” project identify the stakeholders and analyse them for their Power/Interest dynamics (06 marks)

1.c) Analysis stakeholder perspectives of this “fuel pass system” for THREE main groups of stakeholders (08 marks)

1.d) With respect to the “fuel rationing scheme” (that prevailed during August 2022 and further) as implemented for the distribution of fuel to general public, business and other users address tasks 1.d.1 – 1.d.2

1.d.1 – Draw a Swimlane diagram to comprehensively capture the ‘fuel pass registration’ process AND produce comprehensive process description with the aid of ‘use case description(s)’ (09 marks)

1.d.2 – Draw a Swimlane diagram to comprehensively capture the implemented ‘fuel purchasing’ process AND produce comprehensive process description with the aid of ‘use case description(s)’ (09 marks)

1.e) From a Business analysist perspective with respect to the fuel pass implementation project critically evaluate how effectively ‘change management’ was practised by relevant parties to tackle this transition at organisational and individual stakeholder levels as well as for the rolling out the new fuel pass system Island wide. (12 marks)

1.f) From a Business analysist perspective critically evaluate the effectiveness of the TWO processes as described in task 1.d.1 & 1.d.2, and outline how these processes for the fuel rationing scheme could further be streamlined (or improved) for the present time (or future, if warranted) along with specific possible methods of improvements (06 marks)

1.g) Suppose you are tasked with optimising the above TWO processes (processes of task 1.d.1 & 1.d.2) briefly outline an elicitation plan for capturing the said process requirements (04 marks)

Task 02: Gaining competitive advantage with applied analytics

2.a) write (separate) short essays for each topic listed below:

Affinity analysis (Market Basket Analysis)

Cluster Analysis

Intelligent Process Automation (IPA)

Each essay should cover the following elements:

Explanation of the underlying technical concept(s) (3x 2 marks)

Discussion on potential busines use cases (minimum Two) across diverse areas (3x 2 marks)

Discussion of ‘real-world’ business use of successful implementation(s) (minimum One) with details on: the specific technical solution implemented and associated costs & benefits, technical, ethical limitations or risks (3x 4 marks)

(24 marks)

2.b) develop a functional prototype (using R programming language) as a technical proof of concept to demonstrate the business value of the concept of Affinity analysis (Market Basket Analysis)

Discuss the developed prototype within your report and separately upload the well commented R script file and the used dataset along with your assignment submission. Your discussion should include the following:

Appropriate exploratory data analysis, explanation/interpretation of important code snippets & outputs, appropriate visualisations, and prototype to be related to a specific (potential) business use case.

(16 marks)

What to submit

4000 word length detailed report consisting of each of the above tasks, and a CD containing relevant well commented R Script for Task 2.b along with the used dataset.

Very important

You must use Harvard Referencing system throughout your work. Correct in-text referencing is required and a full and correct reference list needs to be provided. Please note for academic acceptance, it is important to refer to adequate sources in building critical arguments with regard to this assignment. Generally, the lecturer expects minimum of 20 latest sources from accepted recommended journals, required reading and recommended readings. For a list of required and recommended reading, please refer the “Module Specification” section of the student handbook.
